Rowan Oak is a two-story white frame home that was built in the 1840s. William Faulkner purchased the property in the 1930s and renovated it by installing plumbing and electricity, painting the walls and redesigning the façade. He later filled it with antiques and furnishings, and also created his own private office where he kept his typewriter and other writing tools. Today, the house is open to visitors who want to catch a glimpse of this novelist’s lifestyle; a tour of the grounds will take you behind the house to the stable and cook’s house, the smokehouse and gardens that have been preserved and maintained for several decades.
